Understanding the ratings

The ratings comprise three categories. A foundational level spanning the progress of learning a new skill, a performance level where the skill is practised on-the-job and finally an expertise level where your contribution is now to either the quality or capability of others or the field of knowledge.

Below is a quick guide for the skills scale to provide a guide to what activity your employee should be demonstrating for the level. You can read more about the scale in the references article “Evaluating performance”.

Foundation level where learning the skill:
– No awareness
– Beginner
– Aware

Performance where you’re applying the skills on-the-job, becoming independent with accuracy and efficiency:
– Developing
– Competent
– Proficient
– Skilled

Expert where the person is contributing to the skill of others or the overall field of knowledge for this skill:
– Supervises
– Coaches
– Expert
