Answers for everyone

Your Skills Passport is a living record that outlines:

    • the technical skills required for your current role,
    • the expected performance level, and,
    • your performance demonstrated using a 10-point scale.

Your manager, or another suitably qualified person within your organisation who has observed your skill level, assesses your performance level using the 10-point scale.

You can view your Skills Passport by selecting “View my Skills Passport” on the left navigation panel.

How to read and interpret this information:

At the top of your Passport you’ll see your skills depth for your role, and how this compares to the typical skills depth across your organisation. In the demo example you can see the person has a high skills range. Most of their skills are rated as Coach or Mastery.

Below the top graphics, you can look at each of your role’s technical skills and see how your performance compares to the level expected. The top bar labelled “current” refers to your skills level, and the bar below refers to the Expected.

This is a great resource for planning which skills you’d like to develop further that will either help achieve team goals or your own personal goals.

Updating your Skills Passport

From the left navigation bar, choose “Update my Skills Passport”. You’ll see the following screen.

By keeping your Skills Passport up-to-date and accurate, you, your team and organisation can gain the most value. Real-time skills information is invaluable for developing your people and delivering on your business objectives.

When you request to update your Skills Passport you’ll have the option to update based on a single piece of evidence such as the completion of a course, an audit outcome or project, or a full review where you enter evidence as you complete your evaluation.

Option 1: Evaluate based on a course, audit or specific development task

When you choose this option, you provide all the evidence to support your new requested ratings just once when you start the form. Because all the changes arise from this task, you only need to do this once. An example of this may be completing a newstarter learning program.

Option 2: Evaluate my Passport with multiple evidence sources

When you choose this option, you’ll get a text box that appears with every new set of technical skills. With this approach, you need to provide enough information for your reviewer to be confident the requested skill level is demonstrated.

Once you’ve submitted your new ratings, your manager receives a request to review and make a decision about your new skills. Your Skills Passport won’t change until this request has been approved.

We conducted a lot of research before determining a suitable scale for PickleWork.

We wanted a scale that encourages learning and development for everyone, and has some reliability between raters.

So the 10-point semantic scale we chose can help identify and address any unconscious bias that might be affecting a person’s career development, provides consistency between raters and encourages both skills depth and breadth.

For more information on the scale read our page on the rating scale.

You can manage your Ultimate Career Goal and Development Plan by choosing “My career and skill goals” from the left navigation bar.

When you don’t have an Ultimate Career Goal, you’ll be prompted to set one up. You can choose to share your Ultimate Career goal with your manager, or a different one. You can set intentions and track they’ve been completed. On your plan, and within your team we keep count of how many goals and intentions are achieved because every little step matters! And importantly you can set whether you want any nudges about your goals and intentions to help you along, or whether you’d like to be left alone.

When you have a plan set, you just click the edit box at the bottom to make any changes.

Within PickleWork you can choose to participate in courses that will develop your skills or you can search and apply for development tasks.

To find a program, choose ‘Search & apply for Skills Program’ on the left navigation panel. You can follow the table links to learn more information about the program, when they might run and what the course involves.

Development tasks can be a great way to learn and demonstrate tasks, as well as build networks across your organisation. To find tasks, choose ‘Search and apply for tasks’ on the left navigation panel.

If you can’t see “search and apply” for development tasks, this feature may not be enabled within your organisation yet.

Answers for leaders

From your left navigation bar, select ‘View and evaluate team’.

You’ll see a table with each of your team members listed. The table will provide the current role used in their Skills Passport, and the spread of their ratings.

If they’ve submitted a request to evaluate their performance, you’ll see a hyperlink in the status column that says “evaluate”.

We don’t encourage managers to complete a Skills Passport without the employee first considering their skills performance. There’s many reasons such as encouraging team members to reflect on their skills, gaining clarity on skill performance and expected level.

You might find a team member (or more) who’d love nothing more than to just pass you their PC and ask you to fill their Passport in for them, or maybe tell them the ratings. Resist the urge! By encouraging all your team to reflect on their performance on-the-job and providing the evidence to support their skills, you’re helping them to have clearer stories top of mind that can help build their role confidence, and you can also see and help correct any insight gaps with evidence.

From your left navigation bar, select “Team planning and goals”.

This section begins by providing you an opportunity to identify the 6 most important skills for your team so you team achieves their goals. You’re not limited to existing role skills, and this allows you to start planning for skills of the future. This could be done as a team exercise, or as an upskilling activity for some of your high performing team members.

When you’ve considered your key skills, you can view how your team’s current performance and goals. You can set leadership and team development goals to help achieve your key strategic skills, and you can also set individual action plans in table at the bottom.

You will receive regular email notifications with a list of actions assigned to you.

And you can see in real-time a summary of your team members and the actions required for each of them on your dashboard. We provide a hyperlink on the dashboard that takes you to the right page to complete the task.
